Obituary of Mary S. Shumate

Mary Susan Shumate, age 91 of Bethel Township, PA passed away on January 21, 2021 at Crozer-Keystone Hospice at Delaware County Memorial Hospital. She was born to Emmett and Bessie (Yates) Pugh in Konnarock, VA on September 20, 1929. In 1953, Mary and her husband French moved to Bethel Township where they resided for over 65 years. Before retiring, Mary was employed with Denney Reyburn Co. and Kennett Cannery.  Mary was proud of her southern roots and enjoyed telling stories about her childhood in Konnarock.  She loved to make southern dishes for her family, especially gravy and biscuits for their weekly family breakfast. Her greatest joys were spending time with her family, babysitting her grandchildren and taking care of her home. Whenever needed, she was there to help. Mary is preceded in death by her husband, French, her parents and her seven siblings. Mary is survived by her two children Ernie (Karen) Shumate, Teresa (Tom) Link, her four grandchildren, Chrissy Shumate, Melissa (Dan) Highberger, Sherry (Keith) Thornton , Tommy (Rebekah) Link and her four great grandchildren Dane, Delia, Austin and Hannah.  A visitation will be held on Wednesday 9-10AM at Pagano Funeral Home, 3711 Foulk Rd, Garnet Valley, PA followed by Funeral Services at 10AM. Interment, Chester Bethel Cemetery in Wilmington, DE.
