My friend Eileen and I were track “managers” for Mr. Mac throughout high school (1985-1989). I learned a lot from him about being responsible, and resourceful, and following through on my commitments. I wasn’t the best runner, but he encouraged me to be better than I ever thought I could be. Oh, and I actually do still use the things I learned in his math class. I’m so sorry for your loss.

As a young person, I remember getting together for parties with many other Haverford teachers at Timber Jump Lane. In all he did, he was always competitive and perhaps that was why he was victorious and successful in all that he did. He often talked of his love for Ruth and his son Matt (my assistant coach for men's lacrosse at Immaculata University). His passion for all he did will be missed by many. My deepest sympathy to his family and may he rest in peace.

How much fun did we have with Mr. Mac as our coach? We laughed as hard as we trained and competed - really hard! We wanted to do well as much for him as for the team and ourselves; that's the level of loyalty he inspired. Largely due to Mr. Mac, we had a great time as well as a great team. I won't ever forget him.

Mr. Mac was my favorite teacher. I had him my senior year, graduated ‘70. He wrote in my yearbook , “Not my best student, but my favorite”. I have thought about him many times through the years. So very sorry for your loss.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Mike's passing. He was a devoted teacher and coach at Haverford High School where we both taught. My daughter, Karen, paid the highest tribute as she said he was a great teacher and she enjoyed his class immensely.

I am saddened to hear of Mr. Mac's death. I drive by Maris Grove almost daily and I always thought of him and Ruth! I was one of his former runners and because of him, I made my way to his alma mater, IUP, I started teaching mathematics and loved coaching cross-country and track. He loved making 800-meter runners and enjoyed winning the 4x800 meter relay! I will always remember his love of root beer candy, girl scout thin mints (my favorite), and of course smoking!! I never smoked but always laughed how we were the same in everything else!! I really loved talking about track with him, he was always so proud of all his runners. He will be missed.

Driving us home , Phyliss, and talking to us in his van for an hour...going to my dads cabin w the xc top boys and girls pre season n flashlight tag at night there where Mr. Mac wasn’t to be found and turned out he climbed up a tree to hide.. Mr. Mac wanted you to stay on the xc team once I got you to go the first day, but you would hide in the Oxford rd, house, where he had me find you to drag you to practice , but after two weeks you were hooked on xc team and mr. Mac and Williams.

Ruth,
So sorry to read about Mike’s’ passing. Pat and I were talking about the game of Risk we played until early morning, and Mike wouldn’t quit until he won. I knew how strong his competitive nature was from the basketball games with Haverford faculty and summer leagues, ( in the old days ) This was also evident in his successful coaching stints.
I don’t know how many times we said let’s get in touch with Mike and Ruth, and we never did. I guess there’s a lesson to be learned there. Please give our condolences to your family and tell them he beat me up every time I played him one on one.
