Obituary of Arthur D. Halpern
Halpern - Arthur David, died on August 16, 2016 at the age of 91. Arthur was the beloved husband of Emily Peck Halpern and older brother of Elaine Borowsky. In addition, he leaves behind three sons; John, Joe, and Bob Halpern. Arthur graduated from Erasmus High School in Brooklyn, NY and attended Columbia University after serving on General Omar Bradley's personal staff during the later stages of World War II. At first Arthur shared his wartime stories in Stars & Stripes but eventually several generations got to hear his tales. After marrying Emily, he began a long career on Wall Street as a runner and ended up owning a seat on the American Stock Exchange. He retired to Fearrington Village, NC and became a devoted fan of the UNC Women's Soccer team, which named its annual Team Intensity Award after him. In addition to his wife of 61 years and his family, which included grandchildren Rachel, Katie, and Jake Halpern, the great joys of Arthur's life were his love of history, books, movies, and sports. A lifetime learner who regularly audited UNC classes in retirement, Arthur was truly a unique person who didn't shy away from offering sports advice to All-American athletes and Hall Of Fame coaches. He was also known for his practicality, understanding of world history, and uncanny ability to make people of all ages laugh. In addition to leaving behind his wife and sons, he is survived by his daughter-in-laws Elizabeth, Joanne, and Maria Halpern. Arthur will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He will be buried in a private ceremony at Washington's Crossing National Cemetery in Newton, PA.
