Obituary of John R. Kaufman
John R. Kaufman, U.S. Navy Captain, (Ret.), age 89, of Glen Mills, PA, formerly of Swarthmore, passed away on September 27, 2021. Born in New Cumberland, PA, he was the son of Jean and Mercedes Beshore Kaufman. John earned his Bachelor Degree from Penn State University and his MBA Degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. John earned a four-year full scholarship for both his college and graduate degrees. John's interest in business started at an early age, from having a newspaper route with 100 customers, to selling vegetable seeds door-to-door, delivering movie theater programs as a pre-teen, to working in a gas station, clerking in a wholesale candy and tobacco firm, data collection for the Federal-State Flood Forecasting System, and as a copyboy in the Editorial Department of a large daily newspaper in his pre-college days. As a Captain in the United States Navy, John's responsibilities as a Supply Corp Officer included budgets, expenditures, overseeing purchases in all areas including food, supplies for the ships, replacement parts, etc., etc. with budgets in the millions of dollars. After graduation and the Navy, John was Vice President of Information/ Research at one of the oldest and largest international advertising agencies in the world, N.W. Ayer & Son Inc., where he was responsible for a large staff and budget. Later in his career, he owned and was President of Help Business Services, in Swarthmore, PA, a Corporate Intelligence and business services firm, with all the responsibilities of management, finance, and staff. He also owned and managed commercial and residential real estate in Philadelphia and the suburbs.
John was the Publisher of Academic Journals, and Vice President of Marketing for the International American Marketing Association, and President of the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Marketing Association. He also was Vice President and President of the Swarthmore Rotary Club, and was a member of the University Club in New York, and the Union League in Philadelphia. A "Pioneer" resident of Newlin Pointe, John enjoyed living at Maris Grove with his wife Toni. Still very active in retirement, John founded and led the Penn State Club, the Beekeeping Club of Maris Grove, and was an initial member of the Finance Committee. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Carl Kaufman. John is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Antoinette "Toni" Kaufman, his sister in law, Lois Kaufman; his two nephews, Doug and Dean Kaufman, his niece, Debbie Carpenter; one great nephew and two great nieces. A visitation is scheduled for Monday, October 4, 2021, 9:30 - 10:45 AM at the Maris Grove Chapel, 200 Maris Grove Way, Glen Mills, PA, followed by a Funeral Liturgy at 11:00 AM. Entombment will follow at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery Garden Mausoleum, Springfield, PA.
