Losing Karen is a hard felt loss. Over the years i have had occasion to sit and talk with her at social affairs and at extended family gatherings. So easy to be in the room with. Her smile was genuine. Her laugh was hardy. She was often i believe going about doing big things when no one was necessarily looking. She had compassion for those under her care. I know she will be missed. Very missed. But know that the many seeds she planted will continue to blossom here. What a wonderful legacy. Peace, Gina Schiavello

I am so saddened to hear the news of Karen's passing. She was an amazing teacher, nurse and advocate for the people at Elwyn. My condolences to her family at this most difficult time.

My wife Judy and I are so saddened to hear of Karen's untimely passing. During my time at Elwyn I had many different jobs but some of my fondest memories are of working closely with Karen. When we were in need of a new Nursing Director, because this position is so crucial, Elwyn's president was very concerned about going even one day without having someone in place. I was told by the outgoing director that we already had the perfect replacement on staff "but she will never take it". We spoke and somehow, I convinced Karen to accept the position. It was one of the best decisions that Elwyn ever made. We became friends as we compared stories of our kids and she was so rightly proud of Amanda. After I retired, she would always ask to see pictures of my granddaughter. Her knowledge of health care was encyclopedic, and I would always say to her "Karen, you are a nurse's nurse." I cannot count the times that I would consult with her over a medical issue. As the population at Elwyn became older and in more need of nursing supports, Karen stepped up and designed them. I do not know what we would have done without her. I also remember the many times that we would both be in hysterics over something that we would share regarding some happening at Elwyn. She touched the lives of thousands of people and always made them better. Barb and Amanda you have my sincerest condolences. Karen was the best.

I was privileged to work with Karen and her wonderful mother for over a decade. They are two of the finest ladies I have ever met: kind, compassionate, intelligent ,dedicated ,beautiful, hard working advocates for the ID community which we served .Memories of late Friday evenings discussing cases , recounting our week with Karen, my office neighbor ,and sharing witty, humor vignettes flood my mind. Our community is greatly diminished by her passing. Not many of us make a difference. She did.
With deepest sympathy
You are in my thoughts and prayers,.

My deepest sympathy to Karen's family and friends. So very sorry. I worked with Karen from the time she started at Elwyn and she oriented with me 20 some years ago. I considered her a friend. May she rest in peace. She will be missed.
