Obituary of Marie Applegarth

Age 91, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on January 12, 2025, at home. Born Marie Antoinette Jenocovich to John and Madeliene Shaw Jenocovich in Lompoc, CA, Marie resided in Wilmington, DE for the past 55 years, previously living in various locations in PA and MD, Santa Barbara, CA, and Los Angeles, CA. Marie also lived with and was raised from her pre-teen years on, by a much older cousin and her husband - Barbara and Arther Beaver; she called them Aunt and Uncle but to her they were her 2nd set of parents.

Throughout her life, Marie held several roles. She worked as a lab technician at Manning Inc., later became a devoted homemaker raising her family, while also working side by side with her husband Charles running 2 ice cream shops - Bressler's 33 Flavors. At Bressler's, among other things, she was a talented cake decorator, turning out beautiful and delicious ice cream cakes for their customers. After she and her husband closed the 2 shops, she worked for various small businesses, always becoming a highly valued employee due to her strong work ethic. At the age of 67, she pursued a career as a Certified Nursing Assistant, a position she held for 12 years. This career, more than any other suited her character and she practiced it with such love, compassion and strength that it endeared her to her clients both during her time with them and long after.

Marie was deeply devoted to her faith and was a longtime member of the Church of the Holy Child in Wilmington, DE. She was active in the Pro-Life movement, donating time, talent and treasure on a regular basis. Above all, Marie cherished spending time with her family, especially her seven grandchildren, whom she adored. Her family filled her with happiness but she always dearly missed her large family in CA and kept in touch with them regularly, visiting them as often as possible.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents - John Jenocovich and Madeleine Shaw Rockenbach, her Aunt and Uncle- Barbara and Arthur Beaver, seven siblings- Betty, Barbara, Stella, Fran, Billy, Eddie, and John as well as her cousin Roberta whom she considered her sister. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles Applegarth, who passed away in 2014.

She is survived by her sister Dorothy Velis; her children, Michael D. Applegarth, Roberta A. (Joseph) Leitner, Charles G. Applegarth, Jon C. Applegarth, Thomas E. (Margaret) Applegarth; her grandchildren, Gregory Applegarth, Christi (Chris Nepi) Applegarth, Jared Applegarth, Joey (Sara) Leitner, Brittney Johnston, Eric (Shirl) Hoffmeier, Bryan Hoffmeier, and Heather Applegarth; 2 great-grandchildren -Scarlette and Parker, and many nieces, nephews and grand nieces/nephews.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 10:45 AM at the Church of the Holy Child, Wilmington, DE, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Interment will take place privately at St. Mary's Star of the Sea in Church Creek, MD.
