Obituary of Michael Sopko
Michael Sopko, age 98, of Kennett Square, PA passed away peacefully on March 28, 2018, 6 days before his 99th birthday. Born in Philadelphia, Michael has resided with his son and daughter-in-law in Kennett Square, PA and previously he resided in Upper Darby, PA. Mike served in the Air Force during WWII and was a POW. He retired from General Electric in Philadelphia in 1981 where his trade was a Machinist. Devoted to his Ukrainian Catholic faith, he was a member of S.S. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Clifton Heights and currently is a member of Holy Myrrh-Bearer's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Swarthmore, PA. Michael was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and the Blind Veterans Association (BVA). In addition to his parents, Andrew and Pelagia Mishanetz Sopko, he is preceded in death by his wife, Maria Dmytryk Sopko who died 2001, a grandson, Markie Dyke and 3 sisters, Anna and Mary Sopko and Stephanie Mihalsky. Michael is survived by 7 children, Anne Marie Sopko, Carol (Robert) Brown, Michael (Patricia) Sopko, Theodore Sopko, John (Maureen) Sopko, William (JoAnn) Sopko and Tina (Edward) Dyke, 16 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, 9:30AM - 10:45AM at Holy Myrrh-Bearer's Ukrainian Church, 900 Fairview Rd., Swarthmore, PA where a Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00AM. Interment, S.S. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael's memory may be made to the Blinded Veterans Association, 125 N. West Street, 3rd Floor, Alexandria, VA 22314.
