I was a student of Mr. Maloney at Hanby Jr. High in the 1970s. I remember admiring his athleticism and thought I might be able to beat him at badminton. I hoped my tennis skills would help me in that regard. I didn’t know until I read the obituary that he was also a tennis player, and a good one at that! He accepted my challenge, we played some competitive points, he gradually upped the level of his play to match mine. I recall one long point where he had me going up and back, side to side until finally I couldn’t make the shot. He beat me, but he respected me. I didn’t mind losing. In Health class, he listened. I remember one discussion about marijuana that caught him a little off guard. He expressed disappointment without being judgemental, thus keeping a door open for further discussion. I am sorry for your loss. He left my world a little better for his presence.
