I know I'm late here, but just ran across Ed's passing via FB. Ed was my rock when we set-up a memorial service for my mother several years ago. I felt blessed to have known him, albeit however brief, and wished that I could've spent more time with him as he was a man of many insights and one of these rare individuals that one never forgets. My sincere condolences to his family and many friends....

Ed was an inspiration to me in my calling as a funeral celebrant. Even though we lived on different continents and never met in person, his words will always be with me and I will always be grateful to him for his light in this world.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Rev Searl’s passing. We will never forget him, as he was the one to unite us in marriage as witnessed by God and beloved family and friends. May he live out the rest of his retirement in God’s kingdom. My condolences to his family and friends.

Ellie, Katie, Bridget and Brett, Ed was so much more than we can capture in words. In the too-short time he was in our lives I felt exhilarated and stimulated to deeper thought and feeling after we parted, always all too soon. He and Ellie were those two people we had always looked for. . .with whom we could have deep and open discussions on virtually any topic: religion, philosophy, politics, culture books and writing. We always hated when the time together ended. He loved to ask provocative questions to open a conversation. And it never happened often enough. He has been a bright light to so many in this world, and I trust he still is, somewhere and someplace about which we do not know yet.

Ellie and Family,
I knew Ed from the time we played Little League baseball.
His dad coached our team in Babe Ruth League.
We also played soccer together from Junior High through
our days at the University of Delaware.
We were close friends in those days, but we only saw each
other a few times since college.
About 5 years ago, we met for lunch with some high school
friends, including my twin brother, Roger.
Ed signed our copies of his book, Around the Delaware Arc.
Ed was a good athlete and a good teammate and was interesting
to talk to because he was so smart.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

The candles i have lit represent each and every one of us whose lives have been touched and
changed forever by Ed.
This light also reminds us that there is light in
our darkness.
That we find comfort in our anxiety and fear, courage and strength in our suffering, patience
and compassion in our caring, consolation in our grieving.
But above all, we will have hope for a new day now and always.

Prayers and condolences to all that new Ed . I am grateful that I had the opportunity to know him. We may not have been in touch for years but when I mentioned my childhood minister his name was always mentioned. He was truly a wonderful man. He will be missed- EVA PERR-Clearwater, Florida

Ed was a valued colleague during the early years of my ministry, through our mutual participation in the Chicago Area Liberal Ministers group. I appreciated his welcoming, collegial presence, his agile mind and poetic soul. I’m grateful for his books; they will continue to enrich my ministry.
