Stephanie, Christine and Monica,
The service was absolutely beautiful and I was so wishing I could have been there in person, but I was there with all of you in my heart. I loved the grandchildren singing and both of your tributes to your dad were so touching. John was one of two of the best bosses in the whole wide world and I learned so much from him over the years. I have so missed him. Stay strong - you have so many great memories of him as do I.
Love,
Carol White

John liked to have a good time as much as anyone but he also had a resolute side. During his tenure on the Board at Rolling Green, one of his duties as Club Treasurer was contacting recalcitrant members whose accounts were in arrears. One such member, James Biden, brother of the future president, was the recipient of one of those calls. After John identified himself and stated the purpose of his call, Mr. Biden asked "Do you know who I am?" John replied "Yes, I do. When can we expect payment?" The high and the mighty and those who thought they were, it didn't phase John. By the way, Rolling Green got its money.

John was a mentor and friend for 32 years. I was lucky that my time at West Conshohocken overlapped with the years just prior to his retirement. He understood everything about ARG and, as Harry often conveyed in stories about their long collaboration, John accomplished things that even John thought might be impossible. Didn’t mean he wouldn’t give it a shot, and most of John’s shots hit the target. He was direct and honest about business problems, but having solved so many of them, it was not unusual for him to greet the next one with a trace of amusement. That’s one reason Jack Daniels and popcorn were fitting participants in his brainstorming with Harry. When I was worried about the future of the company, I’d sit down and talk with John. He didn’t always alleviate my worries, but he made me feel a tad wiser by association, and we always had a good conversation.
Good conversations were one of the things John loved. He also loved challenges, and if you challenged him in a conversation he seemed to particularly enjoy it. He was funny and smart and cocky. He understood the things he loved on many levels – with wine he knew its provenance, taste and effect. With golf he understood the challenge, the glory of the perfect shot, the beauty of the day, and the connection with his fellow players. He was patient with even the worst of golfers – at least with those of us who called him friend. His greatest love was family - Stephanie, the girls, the grandchildren were his joy. Seeing John at a party was like seeing a good bottle of wine at the table - you knew the next couple of hours would be special. Everyone in our small group in West Conshohocken, including our spouses and significant others, just loved the man.
