I met Vernon at Brandywine High School and we became good friends. He was a kind and wonderful person, hardworking and with a great sense of humor. Most of the best times from this time were with Vernon. He will be missed. My condolences to his sons.

I had the pleasure of working with Vernon since the late 1980's when I was a construction intern with DelDOT on the U.S. 202 and Silverside Road project. Aside from work, I had many conversations with Vern over the years about friends and family. He was proud of his boys and would light up whenever talking about his grandkids. I send prayers to the Lawton family and my deepest condolences on your loss.

Vernon was my friend and I always considered him so, even when we didn't see each other for an extended period of time. We met in high school, like many, but he remained a good friend even though time, distance and family separated us. I know the joy in his later life came from his sons, their partners, and his grandchildren, his eyes would light up when he spoke of them. He was equally devoted to his parents, Elsie May and Hal.
Vernon did indeed love cooking and cars. One memory for me in high school was arriving at his house to find him cooking chicken primavera. As one whose culinary peak at that time was making a hot dog, this was astonishing, but to Vernon it was simple. Vernon and his family were always welcoming and I loved them all. Anyone who knew Vernon will miss him. I know I do.

I haven't yet had a chance to dig out my favorite photo of Vernon, so I'll share the memory instead. I knew Vernon best when he, my husband and I were in our 20's. John and I were newly married with a new son, lots of house projects, a lot on our plate, and not a ton of resources. Vernon often drove up to visit us and would stay the weekend lending a hand on projects. His presence always brightened the mood and he became, "Uncle Vern" to Dave.
Since we were in our 20's we were often up late and not getting enough sleep. I remember John sending our toddler in to "body slam Uncle Vern" into waking up. We had much coffee and good times then and those memories will remain with us forever. Somewhere I have a photo of a 2-year-old Dave flying through the air just about to land on Vernon. Until I find the photo you will just have to imagine.
I offer my condolences to Vernon's family and friends. He will be missed.

Of course I remember you from Forwood Junior High! I knew that John was such a good friend of Vernon’s. I remember Vernon sharing that you & John were married. Vernon was very blessed to have all of you in his life! I’d love to catch up if you’d like to be in touch via email…..leaveittolisa@ymail.com

Andrew, Matt and Family,
The entire Husbands family (Aunt Joy, Uncle Tommy, Randy & Lisa) is so heartbroken to learn of Vernon’s passing. Vernon and I went to Forwood Elementary and Forwood Junior High together. Vernon was a year ahead of me and it was always so nice to have a kind & caring cousin attend school with me. I will especially cherish memories of our growing up together sharing birthdays, Ocean City, NJ beach trips to my grandparents’ place, all of Vernon’s amazing cooking along with his immense sensitivity, kindness and very big heart. My heart breaks for him passing way too soon in his life. May God Bless You All.

Vern was my first boss at DelDOT when I was a summer intern. He was knowledgeable and kind and I learned a lot that summer. He's one of the main reasons I wanted to work for DelDOT full-time upon graduation because of my experience under his leadership on Naamans Road. He will be greatly missed. Sending my condolences to his beloved family.
